    Within Technology

Translation and its Status in the Arab World

    By: Ameen Al-Ward

    Introduction:

Translation is an art and science, only mastered by those who are really interested in, and have adequate proficiency and skill, as well as bilingual and bicultural in all various areas of modern and ancient sciences. Obviously, to enter this science or area is like that one standing in the middle of a desert, not knowing the right direction that will lead him to the what destination? Similarly, translation has multiple areas and expanding from time to time and generation to another. No one is able to achieve full comprehension as it is constantly expanding, particularly within the technology and technological development in all aspects on human life. For instance, translation in and pre-middle ages was very finite, specifically in the areas and sciences of that era, such as poetry, literature, stories and others, while it has become today a very broad area and expanding every day. The main reason behind this expansion is resulted by the technology and rapid development and progress in all aspects, which have significantly contributed to the development of this science. As rapid technological development and progress, several areas and new terminologies were added to the field of translation as being needed and used by life and modern era.

Understandably, what we see nowadays is that lots of translators and interested ones in this field have the ability to deal with areas of this era, but they do not know much about the translation of poetry and literature and other areas in the past eras, in other words, high standard and specialized language. Undoubtedly, the ancients were interested in translation, so they translated lots of books and cultures into several languages. They also recruited a lot of knowledge, sciences and cultures of those nations, which was made available to them to interact and exchange with them. As a result, this field requires great interest and knowledge on all sciences and disciplines, most importantly, knowledge of all cultures of those people and their political, religious and social customs and traditions, as well as their characteristics in order to stand on the lexically beyond-connotations as the dictionaries and curricula  often stand  unable to provide us with these connotations.

The learner of this area is like a human newly born who growing up and learning new things every day, however, he dies with many unknown things and even unfamiliar to all things in his mother tongue and culture for a simple reason, which is the reproduction of this language and transformations in that culture regularly, irrespective of his finite abilities towards comprehension of these two aspects, language and culture. Therefore, it is hard to reach the perfection in this area as long as the technological progress is continuous in all aspects, sciences, cultures, and customs and traditions. Noticeably, the status of translation today in the Arab world is clear evidence of the importance of this area in convergence, co-existence, trade exchange, and political, cultural, and intellectual communication. Thus, science of translation has significant contributions to the process of development and technology and transfer of knowledge and experiences and cultures as well. Therefore, this science has been given a wide and great response in the western countries and won a financial and moral support too much by the governments and private institutions, through establishing universities, faculties and departments taught this science with efficiency. Of course, these institutions and universities could produce a lot of translators and specialists in this field with high efficiency and skills. In addition, we should not forget the role of the Orientalism to the knowledge as it translated and revitalized a lot of knowledge, irrespective of the negative aspect of falsification of the facts and service of colonialism by some unfair Orientalists. However, most of the knowledge and efforts of these Orientalists were fair and positive to the Arabic culture and its sciences, ideology and knowledge. Moreover, some of these efforts are still the main references to some aspects of Arabic culture and its sciences and knowledge, particularly, in literature, history, and philosophy and others. They also provided a lot of books and aiding programs to develop this area “Translation”.

For translation in the Arab world today, there are many public and private universities; colleges, departments, and centers pay attention have an attention to this area. Thousands of students, specialists and translator have graduated from these entities. However, most of these graduates do not have the ability to apply and practice what they have learned from these entities on the ground. Unfortunately, we find that a lot of them work in different areas from the areas they have studied. It is true that the interest and support for these areas exists but the problem lies in the performance, weakness and capacity of the curricula that do not avail the needs of the labor market.  Large numbers of graduates of translation suffer from significant weakness in practice ad application on the ground in the Arab world today. The main problem is not I the target language but in their mother tongue “source language”. They suffer from weakness in terminologies and cultural background. The main reason behind this weakness is a lack of knowledge and continuous reading as well as poor education quality and its outcomes and curricula. So, their choice to study translation was just to obtain certificate. We notice nowadays that there is a lack of competent translators and specialists in the Arab world despite thousands of graduates in the field. In addition, many of these graduates are fluent in the lingual component, but they lack the cultural component as translators or specialists in translation. By learning the culture of the target language and culture a society, it enables the learner to practice this area easily as the culture is the key component in the field of translation.

On the same context, what many theories cited on translation over long centuries and until today was that studying this field in not adequate and that the practice is very extremely important. Thus, the practice process requires healthy environment and financial, moral support. This is what huge number of graduates of translation suffers from today in the Arab world. Furthermore, absence of institutions that adopt translation learning in an individual manner is also            the main reason behind poor performance and outcomes of translation in the Arab world and even though there are some but perform timidly. So, the Arab community does not depend on this figure as a whole. If we look at the Arab libraries, we find that most of the books were translated and transferred into Arabic by individual and personal efforts. Undoubtedly, self-effort in translation remains incomplete even though it has great efficiency and high skill.  This matter was not only comprehended by the west, but it was first comprehended by Arabs over long centuries. For example, Dar Al-Hikmah in Baghdad was an institution-based team translation work, not individual efforts. Eventually, I do not know why this smartness is absent today in the minds of those who are in charge of this matter in the Arab world despite the technology and rapid progress in all aspects of life.
