What is Pragmatics?
البراغماتية هي احد فروع اللسانيات وهي دراسة تتعلق بالمعنى “الخفي” او استنباط المعنى من بين السطور من خلال السياق دون ان يقال او أن يكتب ما يقابله. ولذلك تركز بشكل كبير على المجالات الاجتماعية في اللغة. وقد ظهر هذا المصطلح في 1930s عن طريق الفيلسوف C.W Morris ومن ثم اصبح أحد فروع اللسانيات في 1970s.
Pragmatics: is a branch of linguistics) concerned with the use of language in social contexts and the ways in which people produce and comprehend meanings through language. The term pragmatics was coined in the 1930s by the philosopher C.W. Morris. Pragmatics was developed as a subfield of linguistics in the 1970s.
What do pragmatic methods give us in the way of greater understanding of how the human mind works, how humans communicate, how they manipulate one another, and in general, how they use language?.
Examples:
”Ali just met the old man and his son, coming out of the toilet.”
Were the man and his son coming out of the toilet together, or was Ali coming out of the toilet?
“While I was coming out of the toilet, they were waiting”.The soldiers are ready to eat.
The vegetables are ready to eat.
Does this mean that the soldiers are hungry and about to sit down to a meal, or that the soldiers are nicely cooked and ready to be eaten? It’s all about context.

More Examples of Pragmatics in Arabic and English
1- الجو في هذه الغرفة حار جداً)والقصد هو فتح النافذة)
2- حاربي وارقدي ( القصد هو استعدوا للحرب أو قاتلوا ببسالة)
3- جنت على نفسها براقش (القصد هو ان تكون سببا في مصيبة على نفسك).
1- I am broke. ( مفلس)
2- you are overstay your welcome. ( فقط للضيف ثلاثة ايام)
3- she is like a moon.( القصد الفتاة
جميلة كالبدر)
Pragmatics and Semantics
The boundary between what counts as semantics and what counts as pragmatics is still a matter of open debate among linguists . . ..
‘Both [pragmatics and semantics] deal with meaning, so there is an intuitive sense in which the two fields are closely related
Social Language Use (Pragmatics)
You have invited your friend over for dinner. Your child sees your friend reach for some cookies and says, “Better not take those, or you’ll get even bigger.” You’re embarrassed that your child could speak so rudely. However, you should consider that your child may not know how to use language appropriately in social situations and did not mean harm by the comment.
An individual may say words clearly and use long, complex sentences with correct grammar, but still have a communication problem – if he or she has not mastered the rules for social language known as pragmatics. Adults may also have difficulty with pragmatics, for example, as a result of a brain injury or stroke.
Equivalence in Translation
Kinds of Equivalence in Translation
The Dynamic equivalence (also known as functional) method attempts to convey the THOUGHT expressed in the source text using equivalent expressions from a contemporary language like English (‘thought for thought’ translating)
The formal equivalence method (also known as a literal translation) attempts to translate the source text WORD for WORD into another language.
Comparison between Jakabosn and Eugene Nida
Eugene Nida
One of the translation thinkers/theorists.Worked in the field of religious translation/scripture (bible)Founded and differentiated between formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence .Discussed and focused on the role of translation and impact, principles and techniques of equivalence and procedures of translation process, especially use of translation in the scripture (bible).احد مفكري الترجمةعمل في مجال الترجمة الدينية(الانجيل).اسس وميًز بين التكافؤ الشكلي والتكافؤ الديناميكيركز بشكل كبير على اهمية دور المترجم في عملية الترجمة وكذلك مبادئ التكافؤ وتقنياته وإجراءات عملية الترجمة ولا سيمّا تطبيقها على النصّ الديني (الإنجيلي).Comparison between Jakabosn and Eugene Nida
Roman Jakobson
He was a member of the Russian Formalist school. He was one of the greatest linguists of the 20th century. He classified translation into three kinds: intra-lingual –inter-lingual – inter-semiotic. -
